Spring Cleaning

Well, it seems it’s finally time for some

Spring Cleaning

What gets dug out of your closet/garage/junk room?

This weekend, as so many do, your Swagman's family took some time to begin cleaning out the garage. Years of accumulated stuff prevents us from using the garage as it should be used — as a place to send one’s children in order to get some peace while it’s raining and you cannot send them outside because they’ll just sit there getting their electronic devices all wet and you’ll have to contact your mobile carrier and make a claim on the device insurance that you’re pretty sure you bought, but it’s been so long and besides it may be in that box of receipts that you put out in the garage . . .

No, that’s not based on an actual event, why do you ask?

Rant aside, this year’s clean-up lead to a car-load of boxes and bags destined for Goodwill, a couple of boxes of misplaced memories — so happy to be back in hand, and a few more promotional items from your A-Z Swagman’s younger days! (If you look back over my blog, the first one was about some items from my youth.)

Because of our lack of cabinet space, many ordinary mugs we found in this cleaning went to Goodwill, but there were two of your Swagman’s mugs that had to be kept. The first was acquired during my time at The Tennessean. For six years, I worked in the prepress department, preparing the various parts of the daily and Sunday Tennessean (as well as the Nashville Banner — how many of you remember that paper?). I do not remember when or why I received this mug, but it is a quality, deep-etch image that means the decoration will not suffer from washing or regular use.

The second mug that was saved dates back to around the same time (probably earlier) when I bought my first Macintosh. This was a Mac IIsi, which had a whopping 3MB of RAM and a 40MB hard drive. Hey, it was a leap above the MacPlus that my father used to introduce me to Macintosh! I cannot be certain that I received this mug when I made that purchase — or if I spent some of my hard-earned cash on this promotional product.

One takeaway from this second example is the power of a brand. I am proud to say that I am an Apple evangelist (ironically as I type on an HP) and have owned no less than ten Apple products through the years — including at least five Macintosh computers. When you have a product or a service that people love, they will want to express their love of your brand. What better ways than to distribute or sell a quality promotional product with your logo, slogan or image of your company?

Ah, nostalgia. Let us know about your brand evangelism.
